Welcome From The Principal
Welcome to Asa C. Adams Elementary School! We are a vibrant community school located in a small town, adjacent to the state flagship university, the University of Maine in Orono. We serve approximately 300 Pre-Kindergarten through fifth grade students. We offer a wonderful variety of programming for our young learners. All students have art, music, library, physical education and Habits of Mind instruction every week. In the upper level elementary grades, students have the opportunity to participate in instrumental music (band & orchestra) and choral music programs. We have a full time school counselor and librarian. We offer one to one laptops in the fourth and fifth grade classrooms and a computer lab where students have the opportunity to learn and enhance their skills in the area of technology. These are just a few of the offerings that provide our students with a high quality, well rounded education.
We continue to maintain a firm commitment to our curriculum and to a home-school partnership dedicated to meeting the educational, social, and emotional needs of each individual student. While recognizing that learning is a process that takes time, our teachers strive to offer authentic, challenging, and collaborative educational experiences for all students. With an emphasis on caring, respect, responsibility, and the maintenance of high academic expectations, our classrooms are places of learning and enjoyment.
At Asa C. Adams, we offer a comprehensive curriculum in all subject areas. To support our efforts to provide best practices in literacy, we have an active leadership team and a literacy coach. We use the Lucy Calkins Units of Study writing curriculum. Our literacy curriculum uses a reader’s and writer’s workshop approach. Asa Adams School follows the Everyday Mathematics program, which is a comprehensive Pre-K through 6th grade mathematics curriculum. We also offer science and social studies curricula that are aligned with the Maine State Learning Results Parameters for Essential Instruction.
We encourage students to practice good values and have a system in place for recognizing appropriate behaviors. We hold regular assemblies to promote positive behaviors and utilize a comprehensive code of conduct that includes guidelines for encouraged behaviors.
The education of children entails a dynamic fellowship among students, parents, and teachers. At Asa C. Adams Elementary School, we place a high priority on parent involvement. I encourage you to be an active partner in your child’s learning experience. Children are enthusiastic, confident and successful when adults encourage and support their talents and efforts. I invite you to become actively involved in our Parent Teacher Organization as they support our students by offering a variety of services and activities. By working together, we strive to provide an environment that allows each child to reach his or her fullest potential, both academically and socially.
I am looking forward to a fantastic 2016-2017 school year!
